The Steelville Normal School - 1890's
Although located in Crawford County, several students
were from Franklin County. A forerunner of this school was the Steelville
Academy. Normal schools were developed primarily for the purpose of training
teachers and many, if not all, of our state universities, were normal
schools, then became colleges, and, finally, universities.
